Online music lessons: teach and play together in real time
Most online music lessons happen on video-call apps, and every teacher knows the problem: you can
talk and listen, but you can't play together. The sound arrives late, it's filtered for speech, and
only one of you is heard at a time. Solocontutti is made for playing music together online, so
you can accompany your student, play a duet or count them in, as if you were in the same room.
Your students join for free
Students don't need a subscription. With the free version they can join your session and see your
video. Only the teacher needs a subscription: Standard (from €4.99 a month in the EU) to start
sessions, or Pro (from €7.99 a month) to also start a video link. See pricing
for all the details.
Hear every note, without the lag
Solocontutti is an audio-first app, designed for minimal delay and high-quality sound. With good
equipment and a good internet connection, delays of less than 1/50 of a second can be achieved,
close enough to play together naturally. You hear your student's instrument the way it really
sounds, not squeezed through a speech filter, so you can judge tone, intonation and dynamics.
Our guide to latency explains what makes the difference.
Made for teaching
- Video link, so you can see your student's posture, hands and bowing
(starting video needs a Pro subscription; students can join it with the free version).
- A shared metronome that you and your student hear at the same time, even
if your connections have different delays.
- Backing tracks, to let your student practise with accompaniment during the lesson.
- Recording: record the lesson and share it with your student, so they can listen back afterwards.
- Your own mix: turn your student up and yourself down, independently of what they hear.
- Small groups: up to 12 players can be in one session, for ensemble coaching or group classes.
- Accessible: the app supports screen readers (VoiceOver and Narrator), so
visually impaired students can use it too. See using a screen reader.
What musicians say
“The sound quality is great, but even more important: there is no audible delay, so you can play together perfectly. Of course nothing beats making music together in one room, but this app comes very close!”
What you and your students need
- The Solocontutti app on a Mac, a Windows PC or an iPhone/iPad (download).
- Wired headphones. Bluetooth headphones add a lot of delay, and without headphones the sound
feeds back into the microphone.
- A wired internet connection where possible. WiFi works, but it is less reliable and adds delay.
- A microphone or audio interface, or the free plugin
for electronic instruments and DAWs.
Send your students the Quick Start before the first lesson:
a short wizard helps them set up their sound the first time the app starts.
Starting a lesson
- Click "Start" to start a session. You get a session code.
- Send the code to your student.
- Your student clicks "Join" and enters the code, and you're playing together.
